I don’t remember loving that trope as a child, but I guess the alternative is either overly supportive (has its own problems) or normal, which means she’d be too well supervised to do any of this stuff.

Now that I’ve read books 2 and 3 I have a more positive view of the series as a whole; book 1 was definitely the weakest of the lot. But it’s definitely merely slightly above average, not great.
