Well, early for us — the plan was to leave between 10 and 10:30, so I got up shortly after 9 to take care of some last minute packing. Nothing too surprising occurred (in fact, we even managed to remember to change the water jug on the bubbler so J could have water all week), and we got on the road in fairly good time. The day was grey and chilly, and we were tired, but it was hard to be grumpy. Vacation!

We arrived at E’s place, successfully found a parking place, and hauled all of our luggage down to the bus stop. It was on the T that the first snafu occurred: after successfully navigating to Logan, we got onto the “Silver Line”, which is not really a subway line at all, but buses. And, apparently, confusing buses. We got on one and rode for a while, not realizing that this bus would never go down near the dock where we needed to be. After we got off at a random stop, uncertain if it was correct or not, we ended up calling the T’s help line and discovered that we actually wanted SL2, but we had been on SL1. Meh.

So after repaying to enter the station again, we sat down to wait for the proper bus to come by. And waited. And waited. Finally, after more than half an hour, the single Sl2 bus running on Sunday deigned to make an appearance. But that was the last problem with the T: this bus took us right down to the ship.

Unfortunately, this was snafu #2. We arrived, around 2pm, expecting to find people had been boarding for at least an hour, possibly for two. Instead we found a madhouse and a line that was more than a block in length. The ship had returned to port over two hours late, and no one had been let on board yet. We trudged down to the end of the line.

But we had lucked out by messing up on the Silver Line — people began to board by the time we got there, and though we were far back in the line, at least it began to move almost as soon as we got there. It was (slightly) more bearable because it felt like we were making progress. Still, even though the line moved, it was a crawl at best. I took a moment to call my mother, becoming one of those annoying ‘talking on a cellphone’ people for a while. Somehow, as we were inching to the ship, people behind us were redirected and we ended up at the very end. By the time we actually checked in, there were only two people behind us, and we were almost the last people to board.

Now it was past 5pm and we had missed our anticipated lunch — as we headed to our cabin, we found that they were already calling people to the lifeboat drill. The ship was supposed to have left port at 4pm, so already they were well behind schedule. The lifeboat drill was perfunctory at best, and, starving, we piled into the restaurant right at 5:30 to devour our first free meal.

Our waiter was not exactly the best, but the prime rib was good, and at that point, any food would have been a welcome sight. Once we finally finished eating, we headed up onto the uppermost deck to watch as we finally left port. It was chilly on deck, but it had stopped raining and the sky was pretty clear, so there was plenty to see.

After it got dark enough and we were far enough out that there wasn’t much left to watch, we headed into the ship to take a look through all of the decks. The ship has 11 of them, though the bottom two are not accessible to the passengers and 3 and 4 are just cabins. Our cabin was on the 4th deck, very near the center of the ship.

When we finished exploring, I, for one, was still kind of hungry. I hadn’t had any breakfast or lunch, and while dinner had been filling, it was one meal out of the at least two I’d expected that day. So we returned to the restaurant and I had another piece of prime rib. This one wasn’t as good, probably my punishment for being so greedy.

We retired to our cabin after that and played Hearts for a while. Then we headed out again, to see what the ‘Late Night Snacks’ advertised on our schedules were comprised of. It turned out to just be tiny sandwiches and cheese, which was disappointingly insubstantial. After scarfing down a bunch of them we went back to the cabin and went to sleep.

Sunday morning started early.
