I often start to write blog entries in my head while I’m driving in the car or in the middle of doing something else. They seem so interesting and perfect when I do that. I think, “Oh, that will make a great entry. Anyone who reads it will be moved to comment, and I’ll be noted for my insightfulness.”<\/p>\n
Yet somehow, later, when I actually come to write the things, I wonder where the magic went. The ideas seem silly, or at best, just too darn short to be a worthwhile entry.<\/p>\n
In any case, here are a few snippets I was thinking about on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
That morning most of the staff went to a funeral; a woman who’d worked at the library for many years had passed away. I didn’t know her very well at all, but I went. It turned out to be a Catholic service, which I hadn’t realized — for some reason I had pegged the church down the street as Congregationalist. So I didn’t get to see a different denomination’s service, but this one was familiar, so it was interesting in another way.<\/p>\n
The inside of the church was not very inspired. Most town churches in the US seem to have that problem, at least the ones that were constructed in the past century. It was just a barn shape. The only thing of note really were the stained glass windows, which were not of particularly complex or revolutionary design, but instead seemed to be made on the cheap: the majority were symbols (very Da Vinci Code) and even those that had figures just had a single person instead of a group. One did strike me as rather strange — a woman, presumably Mary, though I couldn’t say for sure, lifting up her outer robe to reveal her scandalous red underrobe.<\/p>\n
Only a couple of other things stood out for me. One, they had Large Print Missals, which I thought was a very good idea. And two, just like the other Catholic services I’ve been to, the priest was not so FUCKING OBNOXIOUS that he broke into the mass to tell non-Catholics not to come and take the eucharist. I’m glad to see that at least some people know how to behave at a funeral.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
