There are a lot of books and authors I feel I should like, based on how well their writing coincides with my interests. Tolkein is a big one, and I’ve written about my problems getting in to his books before. But there are a couple others with which I’ve run into the same issue.<\/p>\n
Phillipa Gregory — I love English history, and her most recent books have almost all centered around the Tudor court, which I also find fascinating. But… I don’t know. I just haven’t been able to get in to her books. It’s not the writing style. I’m not quite sure what it is. Perhaps the fictionalisation; the history itself is interesting enough without having to play fast and loose with the facts. If her books were fantasies set in another world rather than purporting to be about real historical figures, I would probably adore them. But it’s also that more and more I’m coming to realize that it’s not so much historical fiction that I like, but rather contemporary fiction that’s 80-300 years old.<\/p>\n
Gregory Maguire — I’ve tried so hard to like him, but it just doesn’t work. My issue with his two Oz-based books are just that it doesn’t feel like Oz anymore (Son of a Witch more than Wicked). Like Gregory, I might like him better if he came up with his own world rather than cannibalizing an existing one. But that doesn’t explain why I have such a problem with his non-Oz books. I barely slogged through Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and I didn’t even pick up Mirror, Mirror.
