In conjunction, I’ve been trying to get hold of some of the books I used to get out of the library pretty often and actually add them to my own personal collection. (Recommendation of the day: The Witch Family, by Eleanor Estes. Read it now. Just do it.)

Some books are easier than others to get hold of, and some, when they are available, are ridiculously expensive. That’s been my problem with this one book, The Ordinary Princess, which is one I don’t have at the moment in any form. Every few months I’d go on a search of various sites — alibris, bn, amazon — and try to see what they were going for at the moment, since it was out of print. The last time I searched, the cheapest I could find it was at amazon uk for about 20 pounds. Not a price I could afford. But! Joy! Friday I happened to check again, and amazon has it up for pre-order for $12! in Hardcover! I’m so excited. This recent rash of republishing is a good thing, even if a lot of the prices are outrageous.

I think next I’m going to go after the Dorrie the witch books. A lot of them were out of print the last time I went looking, but Harry Potter madness has seen a huge proliferation of books about witches and wizards, so maybe someone will realize and start printing them again. And I -will- manage to find Jane of Lantern Hill for a reasonable price. I need to poke into used bookstores more often.

One of the things I’ve been doing in recent years is to replace some of the kid lit paperbacks I have that are in poor condition with hardcovers.
