The day was to be devoted to Quidditch, as our team, the Silver Snakes, had at least two games in the morning, and possibly more in the afternoon. So I packed an extra shirt to change into after the games, grabbed my umbrella as a concession to the grey weather outside, and headed off. I managed to catch the shuttle bus around 7:45, which put me at the Quidditch Breakfast around 8:30, only a half hour after it started and not really “late” by my reckoning.

The day was hot and damp, and I was in jeans and a long sleeved black shirt, so it wasn’t entirely comfortable, but the temperature was just on this side of bearable. Breakfast wasn’t bad, though it was there that we discovered that our team was two men down. (Or rather, one man and one woman down.) There were a few other teams in a similar predicament, but given that to play pro quidditch was an additional charge on top of the attendence fee, most people managed to show up. For some reason we were just unlucky in this.

Our first game was scheduled for 10, so we all soon headed up to the pitch — the Salem Commons — and milled around in the drizzle until everyone was ready to play.

As they were unable to come up with any flying brooms for our use, we were forced to make do with a modified version of quidditch that involved running around on the ground. If you’re looking for a quick and dirty description, I’d say it was like a combination of basketball and dodgeball. But a more detailed explanation can be found at the event website.

I was a Chaser — having GMed games online for the last 4 years suggested to me that this would be the most interesting position, and I don’t think that I was wrong, though both Seeker and Beater had some interesting facets to them. (Keeper was boring as ever.) The quaffle was a ball the size of a small volleyball, with a similar feel to it, while the bludgers were kickballs. And, of course, as I mentioned before, it was raining and we were outside.

We recruited some replacement players from teams who weren’t yet playing and began our first match. We were among the first group of teams to play, and the first game was a learning experience for everyone, players and spectators alike. (We won, 80-20). By the time our second game rolled around, the ground was a giant mud slick and game play had become much more physical as everyone slipped and slid into the mud. We lost this one, due to some bad luck with the snitch, and at that point we had to wait and see if we were going to make it to the quarter finals.

I was muddy, but not disgustingly so, and J and I stopped by the posh Hawthorn Hotel lobby so I could borrow their restroom and cool down a little before we walked up the street to lunch. We found the Thai place where we’d had the sauce adventure before. The food was as good as before, but the service was sadly lacking; instead of the energetic woman, we had a very listless man as our waiter, and when it seemed he was not going to bring our check, I left to head back to the pitch and left J to wait for it. (She said it took quite a long time to arrive even after I departed.)

Upon returning to the Common, I found that we had indeed advanced to the quarter final round, and our next game was at 1:30. Having just spent the past hour and a half cooling down and starting to feel less muddy and gross, I was of mixed feelings about this news. But we took the field against the Gargoyles and managed to pull off a surprising win, due to the excellence of our Seeker. I would have to rank this game and the first one as my favorites, not so much because we won, but because I felt the teams were evenly matched and the game was good. Our second match, the other team’s Chasers were just dominating the pitch, and it was very discouraging.

At any rate, our win now propelled us into the heady realms of the semi-finals. By now the rain had been continuing at a fairly steady (though light) rate for hours, and the fields were no longer so much grass as wallows with bits of green here and there. So it was with some relief that the snitch was caught quite early on in our 4th match, though disappointing that it was not caught by us.

I was faced with a decision at this point. The afternoon matches had left me considerably dirtier than the two in the morning, and it was now only 3:15. The final, which I wanted to watch, was scheduled for 5, so I just barely had time to get back to the Sheraton, take a shower, and get back to see. So, feeling too muddy to enter any buildings, I took this opportunity. The trip back to Danvers took a lot longer than I anticipated, but it was worth it. I cleaned off my sneakers and managed to mostly dry them using the heating unit in the room. After a shower, I was ready to go again.

I didn’t get back to Salem proper until about 20 past 5, and discovered there that they had unexpectedly moved the final game to 4:30. This move angered many, as the announcement was not well publicised, and a lot of people who’d wanted to watch the final missed out. Anyhow, since the match was over, there was little to be done but head over to the quidditch picnic, where they were providing free pizza.

It was at this point that I was a bit dumb. We had wanted to go to the informational meeting for Lumos, the next symposium sponsored by the same non-profit that ran this one. It was scheduled for 8pm at a local restaurant, but I heard people talking about it and thought they were heading over at 6. Given that the schedule had been loosely adhered to in other cases (see: the Quidditch Final), I was concerned that the time had changed and it had not managed to make it into the program.

As a result, J and I headed over to the restaurant around 6 to see what was going on. And we found a group there, so thought we were in luck. It took us probably a half an hour or more before we discovered that this was not the group we were after, but a gathering of Pagans for HP or something like that. In any case, we hung around until 8, at which point, after having an odd conversation with a drunken girl, we couldn’t find the other group, so we left.

We headed back to the Sheraton to check out the wireless situation. Now, prior to leaving, I had checked out their website, which claimed that every room had a high-speed internet jack (wired) and that wireless was available in the lobby. All would require paying a fee. We had already discovered the wired rooms to be a myth, as nowhere in our room was internet access even mentioned other than on the television. So I wasn’t sure what to expect from the lobby wireless.

Happily, it turned out to be free. So, after a short attempt at setting up camp in the living room next to a wedding reception with a surprising number of people walking to and fro over my power cord, I found an outlet near a group of HP fans writing drabbles and chatting.

After a not too serious attempt to catch up with my email inbox, I headed up to bed.

In spite of having gone to bed so very very early, I didn’t sleep soundly or wake up, as I anticipated, around dawn.
