We finished priming and got two coats of grey paint on the walls in there. It’s starting to look less hideous, as long as I don’t glance at the mess we’ve made of the floor. I shudder to think of the effort it’s going to take to clean that up.

The toilet decided to throw a fit, so we’re not sure what’s up with that yet.

Sunday, we headed out around 11 to hit the first showing of Star Wars 3 at the new movie theatre. It was good planning on our part: we arrived shortly before 11:30 to find there had been a giant line outside the theatre waiting for the box office to open. We attached ourselves to the end of it and found the noon show was already sold out. But we got tickets to the 12:30, trotted right in (first showing of the day in that particular theatre) and secured ourselves excellent seats right in the middle. I had a book, so the wait wasn’t too awful either.

Now, the movie:

To reuse a phrase, it wasn’t too awful. Certainly not as awful as it could have been. They made Anakin’s turning to the Dark Side pretty believable with the whole fear of loss idea. It was clear why the Jedi needed to die, and their slaughter was appropriately horrific — especially the off camera bits, which I am so very glad were left to the imagination.

Jar Jar (who was on screen more than just once in spite of E’s hopeful remark) did not appear to have any lines at all which was a blessing. Anakin had a lot which was not a blessing. His angsting was poorly done; he did a much better job at being sullen and evil in the second half of the movie.

In spite of the many plot things which were done well (deaths of the Jedi, Anakin’s fall into Darkness, Palpatine’s rise), there were some serious issues. Almost all of them surrounded Padme. Her characterisation was really off: was this really the queen of Naboo? The Senator who stood and fought and blasted people alongside the Jedi? This wimpy little whiner who curled up and died just because Anakin didn’t turn out to be the man she thought he was? Gah. Something was very wrong there.

And the pregnancy part was rather screwy. All right, fine: this takes place long long ago in a galaxy far far away. I get it, they’re aliens. But when you make the main characters seem human in every way, if you want their reproduction to be somehow different, you need to provide some groundwork for that, I’m sorry. Padme did not look more than 6 months pregnant at any point in the movie. Yet at the end she somehow produced two giant babies out of that tiny stomach. And just before that she was running around as if she were not awkwardly shaped with a large weight on her front. Messed up. And why in hell did Anakin not know it was twins? Padme certainly seemed to have two names at the ready. Did he not want to see an ultrasound picture? You cannot tell me these people can travel faster than light, make droids that act human, reconstruct the bodies of people who catch fire from lava pits, yet do not have the ability to image the contents of a woman’s uterus.

But I now want to watch all 6 in a row, just to see if it hangs together correctly. Leia’s speech to Luke about remembering her mother is niggling at me, since obviously Leia could not have met her mom since she was dead at the time.

Later, after we got home, the DSL decided to pitch a fit (in solidarity with the toilet?) so we have to wait and find out what’s wrong with that too.

On Saturday, mom came over to help plug away at the bathroom.
