The problem is that the vast majority of the so-called lists that are out there are pretty generic — either not written by New Hampshirites, or applicable mostly to the North Country, in which I do not reside and never have (and neither does about 80% of NH’s population!) In point of fact, the lists would be more appropriately titled ‘You know you’ve never been to NH if you think these are true…’

But a lot of people are still doing it, so here is the list I turned up with the content only slightly edited for relevance.

o you design your Halloween costumes to fit over snow suits [Well, not quite, but it was always important to make sure you could incorporate your winter jacket without spoiling the costume.]
o you have 10 favorite recipes for moose meat [I include this one only because it’s so ridiculous. I’m sorry, but a moose in Nashua would be as big news as it was a few weeks ago when there was one in the town of Wellesley.]
o you think the start of moose season is a national holiday [Same deal]
o driving is better in the winter because the potholes get filled with snow
o know the names of the four seasons: Tourist, Foliage, Ski and Mud.
o know the back roads, and drive them to avoid the toll booth
o if your pick-up truck is 4-wheel drive, has a gun rack, a plow on the front and a dog in the back.
o if there is a picket fence around the house, a garden in the back, a woodpile somewhere, some appliances on the front lawn, and a rusty pick-up pushed into the woods.
o if you say “Ames-es”, and you do all your shopping there. [Dated now — Ames’ all went out of business a few years ago.]
o if you read the Union Leader and believe it

I was looking for ‘You know you’re from New England’, but couldn’t find anything.

So here are some I made up myself — probably more applicable to Northern/Central New England, but hey, if everyone thinks New Hampshire is full of moose, I should be granted a bit of leeway.

You know you’re from New England if…
o the street you live on has a different name depending on which direction you’re travelling
o you know that if you tried to pahk your cah in Hahvad yahd, it would be TOWED
o it’s BER-lin, Char-LOTTE, and Wuh-stah
o New Hampshire doesn’t end with an ‘r’, but Area does.
o Bill Buckner jokes still make you laugh. And then you cry.
o you know that New Hampshire has a seacoast
o you accept the fact that the more important a road is, the less likely it is to be marked
o there are no less than 4 Dunkin’ Donuts franchises within a mile of your home

Most if the ideas I can come up with are vocabulary related.
