I cannot express how much I loathed Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy; I hated him and I hated the portrayal of the character. Part of it was the look — as difficult a time as I have picturing characters from books in my head, I never /ever/ pictured Lucius and Legolas sharing a hairstyle. But that whole movie was a disaster best erased from the minds of men and women everywhere. Replace it with this one, which takes a children’s book featuring magical themes, one with many interesting scenes, and attempts to distill the story into a coherent plot with actual character development. Especially with regards to Hook, who has redeemed Isaacs forever in my mind. (And makes me wish now that they’d cast him as Sirius instead of Lucius!) I was not so stuck on Peter; his accent was American, which was jarring, and his acting was only so so. But he was very very pretty indeed. The rest of the children put in decent performances, far above most of the children in the Harry Potter movies, to which I must, of course, compare them.

Return of the King: There were a lot of plots to tie up in this movie, and even though it clocked in at around 3 hours, there would not have been time to do them all. It was pretty well done, however, and I enjoyed it as a fitting end to a wonderful, wonderful trilogy. Every time I watch these movies I think that I want to read the books — an impulse that is cured as soon as I pick up the books and start to read. This is such a rarity that I can’t really think of another series where it’s the case.

Master and Commander: It is certainly not the case for this series. I had never heard of the books before the movie came out; the movie was quite good for a movie starring Russell Crowe. I enjoyed it. The characters were engaging and I felt really interested in their fates. Paul Bettany was very nice. As a result of the movie, I’ve been inspired to read the books, and as I see from Mei-chan’s blog, I am not the only one who has noted that the slash factor is through the roof. After reading the first book, I’m inclined to think that Crowe (or the script) played Jack as too insightful, but I suppose it would have been difficult to avoid on screen.

Mona Lisa Smile: I was very nervous going to see this movie, and I have a feeling that this concern colored my opinion of it. I wasn’t able to watch it for the story; I kept thinking about the Wellesley aspects, watching for locations I recognized, thinking about the traditions they were having show up on screen, etc etc. It was not, on the whole, a bad movie. It was not, however, a great movie. It was more of a July movie than a December one, in other words.

Other things I’ve not mentioned in my long silence.
