I had meant to write about a lot of stuff over the weekend, and never quite managed to get up the energy to do it.

Friday I went to the MIT anime showing. It was a little weird being back there after 3 years, and it was even more weird to see people I recognized from then still around. The room has been redone, but I can’t say if it’s better or not — it just looks more plush, I don’t think it actually -is-. The things that were shown were Trigun 1-4, Windaria and Dual 1-2. Thanks to the fact that the buses are finally running until a reasonable hour, I was able to stay for all of it (though it turned out that it got over in time to catch the last train anyway).

Trigun: Sort of the anti-Cowboy Bebop. I definitely liked it better than Cowboy Bebop (which I found to be insanely boring most of the time, even though I liked the character designs and the animation). I hadn’t seen it before, so I was enthused to watch it for free before deciding whether or not to purchase it. Since it’s the semester series, and they should show all of it, I guess I won’t need to be in a hurry for that. Except looking at the calendar, I think I may miss a showing when we go away. Basically, there’s this guy, Vash, who is an insanely competant gunslinger/fighter/everything else, but he is also a giant goofball so no one believes he is who he is. There are also these two insurance chicks, who are trying to find Vash, so they can keep an eye on him and cut down on the Vash-disaster related insurance claims. Of course, this leads to all sorts of hilarious scenarios. Hopefully Wolfwood will show up in the next group of episodes so I can get an even better idea of what it’s like.

Windaria: An older anime. It was a movie, and I felt like it was suffering from PSME/X/anything else with a lot of manga and 2 hours to tell it in-syndrome. There were a lot of things in the movie that weren’t explained, yet were semi-integral parts of the plot. It did, however, make sense, inasmuch as the X movie also made sense (I mean, c’mon people, how difficult was the plot of the X movie? People who were confused by it were either a) stupid, b) trying to see something that wasn’t there, c) stupid, d) too hung up on the manga to realize of /course/ it wasn’t going to be the same). The main character, Isu, was not at all sympathetic, and so I was happy at the end when his wife (I’m assuming she was his wife — which makes the fact that he ran off even -more- irritating) died. Originally, I wasn’t too keen on the fact that he got to have a meaningful conversation with her ghost (I had been hoping for him to come home and find a bloody corpse), but in one sense, the ghost was probably more mean — he thought she was alive, but then, haha! she wasn’t.

Dual: We were warned before this started that it was quite the Eva clone, and they weren’t kidding. But since it was made by AIC, it also has their typical plot (ie, an ordinary guy with a bunch of girls), so it’s kind of like Eva where instead of Shinji, Tenchi is the hero. Which is kind of good, because Shinji is a whiny git. But he has a cool voice actress, who made up for a lot — it remains to be seen if Dual manages to pull it off. So far I’m interested to see more. There was one plot point which came up at the end of episode 2 which I have no idea how they’re going to explain.

After the showing I went home on the train. It was still early enough that there weren’t the number of drunken people one might expect (and I think also that some colleges haven’t started yet, so people haven’t been around to get sloshed). But there was this one girl and guy sitting across from me, all cozy. Then the train started to empty out and the girl’s friend came from where she was sitting and started sobbing all over the two of them. The guy got up pretty darn quick and started trying to pretend like he wasn’t associated with either of them (looking in his wallet, looking up and down the train, etc.). They all got out at Alewife, and when I left, the crying girl was bitching out this other guy who’d been sitting a little further down the train.

Saturday, we went in to go to Cirque, but first I wanted to stop by the bookstore and get the course packet for my class that starts on Tuesday. But, of course, the place where the syllabus -said- it was being sold was a) closed and b) apparently not the correct place. Since I had not looked up the location of the building where the sign said Extension course packets were being sold, and it was damn hot, I didn’t get it. Which means I have to get up ridiculously early tomorrow, so I can get there very early and try to track this down. Grr.

We got to the station where we were supposed to meet everyone really early, and then they were late, which didn’t put me in a great mood. But we managed to get to the place in time (if just barely), so I guess it worked out.

Cirque: The show this time was Dralion. The music was great, the costumes were great, and the performers were also great. But something — I don’t know. Something was missing. It felt just a little bit flat. The only other show of theirs I’ve actually seen all of was Quidam, about 3 years ago in NYC. And, comparing the two, I felt disappointed by this one, even though it was really good. It may be just that it’s never as exciting as the first time — I’d have to go again to see if that really held true. Hopefully they’ll come back. ^_^

Dinner was good (the chicken was WONDERFUL), but the restaurant itself had some problems: it was very hot, crowded, loud, and there were those really annoying little bugs flying around. I hate those!

Accomplished: filed all my papers! studied Japanese (but not as much as I wanted to), put together the deposit for the bank and put it in the mail

We had Food Network this weekend too. I watched it way too much. I hope it stays, or we can order it. New Iron Chefs start this week!

Faugh. I HATE this network. Can’t it stay up for 2 minutes?!

Actually, I think that may be the problem. It does stay up for 2 minutes, but then it goes down for 20. Grr.

So, let’s see.
