The cast was fairly decorative, which was nice. All in all, I thought it was a good movie. Not an action movie. The plot speed was more of a romance, but it wasn’t quite that either. There were several things in the plot which they didn’t bother to explain fully or explore, though: a) why was the reactor officer drunk? Was his drunkenness because he knew the reactor was flawed? Or was it flawed because he was drunk? b) The doctor ran out screaming that they gave him the wrong medicine. Then he was hit by the truck and killed, presumably without managing to tell anyone that they had the wrong medicine. But there were plenty of injuries and sickness in the course of the movie, and having the ‘wrong medicine’ was never a plot point. It seemed like they just threw the character away to add to the additional ‘curse’ on the sub, and it wasn’t well tied into the plot.

Jeff came down and spent the night at our place so we could get an early start to Six Flags on Saturday. It turned out that we didn’t get an early start after all, though. We got there finally around 2pm or so, and it was HOT. It was hot and nasty and sticky and bleah. We were going to go into the water park bit of the park, but there was a huge line. Instead, we went on the bobsled ride, because it had virtually no line. Then we got some food, even though I really didn’t feel like eating anything in that heat. After that, we went and stood out in the sun to go on the log flume ride.

Then, Batman. The line here had mist coming down, which helped a tiny bit, and a guy came buy selling lemonade, which helped a tiny bit more. The coaster was good, but not smooth enough — it banged my head around on the shoulder harness, and I really hate that. It’s absolutely guaranteed to give me a headache. Once we got off that, we trekked over to Superman, just to get /that/ line over with.

Well, that line was even worse, but a few things of note took place there: this group of six teenagers cut into the line and were forcing their way to the front. Then, this guy who was in the line near us, leapt ahead of them and refused to let them go any further. They had a lengthy discussion, and several of the kids tried to sneak by him. But, really, they didn’t have a leg to stand on, and eventually he made enough of a fuss that they departed. Everyone applauded. Later, as the line snaked around, we found out that the guy and his group knew some of the relatives of C., who was with us. ^_^;; The next thing happened after we were further ahead. The guy right in front of us got all wobbly and started shaking, and if he didn’t black out, he came damn close to it. They had to take him up to the ride and have him sit down for a while, and people all giving him waters.

Eventually we got up to the ride and got on. It was… very hard to describe. The ride was smooth, there were no upside down loops, and it absolutely deserved all of the praise it’s gotten. It was a great coaster. Spectacular. The experience probably also colored our reaction to the next ride, Nightwing, which was a great idea that didn’t quite come off. I’ve been thinking about that, and I think the way the ride goes is the part that messed up the experience: having everyone go upside down that way doesn’t give them the experience of flight, which is what the position implies. If it just had you go around in a horizontal plane, perhaps slightly tilted, it would have done a better job.

We went around a bit more, and unfortunately it never did really cool down at all. As the sun went down, however, we were joined in the park by zillions of bugs, including mosquitoes, my mortal enemies. The last ride I went on was Scream, one of those elevator/tower rides. The experience of being on it was not what it looked like from the ground. I’d had that feeling before, when I went on the one at Universal, but this one was taller, so I thought it might be different. I was wrong. Jeff, E and C all went on a wooden roller coaster after, where E had an interesting experience. Then we left. It was about 2:15 by the time Okina and I got home from dropping Jeff off up at mom’s house, and I was completely and utterly exhausted.

Sunday: I felt better after some sleep, and went over to Mei-chan’s house to watch Sen to Chihiro. It was amazingly enjoyable, the animation was beautiful, and the story compelling. But… the American in me comes screaming out at the ending. I like resolution, and I felt like it didn’t resolve the things I wanted resolved. Namely, Haku! I wanted to see him back in the real world, or at least to have some hint that he was actually going to follow through, now that he knew it was possible for him to leave. The way it was left, if it had been an American movie, I would have said they were leaving it open for a sequel. (Not that /not/ leaving it open has stopped Disney recently…) This not being the case, I was still not satisfied by it. It cut off just as it started to get really interesting. Which is why I’m going to have to plunk Sen with Kiki and Nausicaa as second favorite Ghibli films. Mimi o sumaseba still claims first. This does not, however, mean that I don’t need to buy the DVD now.

Today I also found that amazon japan actually has the new CLAMP artbooks North Side and South Side up for pre-order. This is amazing. They almost never have artbooks listed until after they come out. Sigh. Must have.

There’s also going to be a Chobits Gameboy Advance game. I’ll probably pass on it, even though it looks really cute. I still haven’t gotten very far in Angelic Layer, and I’m still boggled by the existance Hana Yori Dango Gameboy Color game.

Trekking all the way back to last weekend: Saw K-19.
