J quoted to me a bit of discussion from a mailing list which I wasn&#8217;t on, where there was a brief debate about whether a Mary Sue can only exist in fanfic &#8212; in other words, there are no Mary Sues in original fiction.  I joined the list too late to get in on the discussion, and didn&#8217;t care to jump right in, so I will post my answer here (which is HELL YES).
