That’s what fanfiction is. It is FANS. Writing FICTION.

fiction (n.)

1. a. An imaginative creation or a pretense that does not represent actuality but has been invented.
b. The act of inventing such a creation or pretense.
2. A lie.
3. a. A literary work whose content is produced by the imagination and is not necessarily based on fact.
b. The category of literature comprising works of this kind, including novels and short stories.

If you don’t like a particular type of fanfiction, do not read it. Do not get on a high horse about how -your- particular type of fanfiction is more real than someone else’s. It’s all the same. None of it is real. None of it happened in the actual universe of whatever character you’re writing about. This goes for stories about Lois and Clark as well as stories about Clark and Lex.

And, frankly, it’s just as presumptuous to force a heterosexual relationship on a character as a homosexual one.

I admit that I am more a fan of relationships which can be supported by some evidence. Why? Because it’s less of a stretch to feel that the characters are behaving ICly, and the likelihood of a story about the pairing being readable increases dramatically. And again, this goes for all fanfiction, not just slash. If you don’t do a good job convincing me that Sprout and Flitwick should be getting it on, I don’t see why I should agree with the choice just because it’s a heterosexual relationship. Given that we know nothing of their inclinations from the books, there’s no evidence to support it one way or the other — which, frankly, is probably what spurred the writing in the first place. Ideas are not more valid simply because they are more mainstream. Ideas are not more valid simply because they are yours.

I have recently read a rant about slash fiction.
