We didn’t actually drink any tea, but it was on the menu! We met at first outside of Orchard House while waiting for everyone to show up. There were Japanese tourists outside too and I understood what they were saying!

Of course, this isn’t as great as it sounds: the tourists were two very small boys and their father, and the only one talking was about 4 years old. But!

Anyway, then we went inside. I was good and bought no books. And no cross stitch stuff. And no quilting stuff. The tour was pretty cool. The Alcotts were a pretty impressive family, even -without- Louisa. Her sister May was the first art teacher of the guy who did the Lincoln memorial. Her paintings were in the Salon with Mary Cassat’s. The house itself is really quite small, and it’s not in very good condition. The non-profit that runs it is trying to raise money for renovations, but I gather it hasn’t been easy. Bronson Alcott made a lot of additions to the house when he was there, and he was a philosopher, not an architect — the structure isn’t as well supported as it should have been. So the floors are sloping and ceilings are drooping and everything needs a very general overhaul.

After the tour we went further into Concord to the Colonial Inn and had some lunch. It was pretty good, though the parking was horrendous. Hardly any spaces, all of which were full. I had to drive around the block half a dozen times before I finally gave in and parked in a space marked for a store I wasn’t going in to. After we got seated at the restaurant I came out again and moved the car to a better spot.

Then I came home. So now I have to do some of the stuff I have on my list for this weekend.

Or maybe I’ll do something that -isn’t- on my list, like work on the Akage no An script. Hmm. It bears thinking about.

Just got back from the New England Kindred Tea.
