Text can convey a lot, but when it’s being sent out in approximately real time to people who don’t know you very well, it’s so easy to misunderstand tone and intention. Which is why it’s so important to express yourself when you have a problem. Don’t bottle it up. Don’t start to imagine vast conspiracies against you. It’s really a very simple concept.

Unfortunately, several of the online communities of which I am a part have a disproportional percentage of people who are shy and/or have felt ostracized in the past. People who very much want to be part of the group, but are insecure about their position and inclined to be a bit paranoid and react badly to the smallest perceived slight. I recognize those tendencies in myself and try to avoid acting on them. But I am, frankly, sick of it. This is a scenario that has played itself over and over again, and it’s really getting old. The world is not out to get you, no one is ganging up on you, no one is ignoring you, your opinion is valued. But don’t expect people to spend their days kissing your ass. Expect disagreement. Expect discussion. Expect to be treated like a functioning, rational adult. And then behave like one.

And no, this actually has nothing to do with you, if you’re reading this. But if you want to believe it does, I really don’t care.

In other news, went to a used bookstore today and picked up hardbacks of _A Swiftly Tilting Planet_ and _An Acceptable Time_. They also had a hardcover of Anne of Ingleside that I almost got, but it wasn’t in really great condition. Otherwise their kid lit section was sadly lacking in stuff. I guess that’s kind of the risk you take with used bookstores, though. I’ll have to hit the ones in the other part of town over Thanksgiving.

One of the problems of communicating online is the ease with which people can misunderstand you.
